TURNING WATER INTO WINE

The Gospel of John Series Part 1 of 10

John 2:1-11

Jonathan Langford

January 30, 2005

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.        John 2:11

Reasons for Signs and Wonders:

For His glory

For our good

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.                               John 20:30-31

Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.                                                      John 12:17-18

By turning water into wine Jesus wants us to

1. Know Him as the Word Made Flesh Our Creator

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.                                       John 1:14

'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.              John 14:1

Jesus Seven Signs in the Gospel of John

1.      Changing water into wine in Cana (2:1-11)

2.      Healing an officials son in Capernaum (4:46-54)

3.      Healing an invalid at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem (5:1-18)

4.      Feeding the 5,000 near the Sea of Galilee (6:5-14)

5.      Walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee (6:16-21)

6.      Healing a blind man in Jerusalem (9:1-7)

7.   Raising dead Lazarus in Bethany (11:1-45)

2. Put our faith in Him Our Savior

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.                                                                                                                                            John 1:12

'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.                                                                                            John 3:16

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.  Hebrews 11:5-6

3. Experience Real Joy in Our Lives

He (Moses) raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood  Exodus 7:20

I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.                     Luke 2:10

What do you do when your wine (joy) runs out?

  1. 1.  Find the source                  (When the wine was gone Jesus mother said, There is no   more wine  vs. 3)

2.     Follow the recipe                                       ('Do whatever he tells you.' vs. 5  )

  1. Feast on good wine                          ( you have saved the best till now vs. 10)

4.     Expect Real Change

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

 2 Corinthians 5:17 17

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.                                                                                                                                    Romans 12:2

And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

                                                                                                                                                                                    2 Corinthians 3:18
