TOWARD THE TITHE AND BEYOND
Stewardship Series Part 3 of 3
January 23, 2005
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
Six Biblical Reasons to Tithe
When we go to the tithe and beyond we
1. Honor an Old Testament principle of how God provided for the ministers he called and the expenses of their ministry.
You shall have no inheritance in their land, nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel. And to the sons of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform, the service of the tent of meeting.
Do you not know that those who perform sacred services (in the temple) eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar (of sacrifice in the temple) have their share with the altar? So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.
1 Corinthians 9:13-14
2. Honor the Creator as rightful owner of all.
The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it.
3. Take a strong cure for covetousness.
"Thou shalt not covet."
"Beware, and be on your guard against every form of covetousness (or greed)."
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have.
Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
4. Follow Gods way of bringing about good deeds for His glory.
You may have an abundance for every good deed.
2 Corinthians 9:8
Christ died "to purify for himself a people who are zealous for good deeds."
"You will be enriched in everything for all liberality."
2 Corinthians 9:11
5. Follow God's way of providing sufficient money for our needs.
"He who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully."
2 Corinthians 9:6
"God is able to make all grace abound to you that always having all sufficiency . . ."
2 Corinthians 9:8
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap.
6. Build our God-confidence.
Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you."
"My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus"
