I  AM THIRSTY

The Gospel of John Series Part 8 of 10

John 19:28-30

Jonathan Langford

March 20, 2005

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

I Cor. 2:2

THE CROSS CALLS ME TO:

C Come to the end of myself

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live           in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Gal. 2:20

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Rom. 6:11

R Repent of my sins

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for            the       forgiveness      of  your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.   Acts 2:38

O Offer myself up to God

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as living     sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Godthis is your spiritual act of worship.        Rom 12:1

S Separate myself from sin

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and   desires.                                                                                                                                                                                  Gal. 5:24

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no        means!             We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?                                              Rom 6:1-2

S Share the cross of Christ

Then he said to them all: If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take           up his cross daily and follow me.                                                                                                 Luke 9:23

The Seven Last Words from the Cross:

First Word:

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.                      Lk. 23:34

Second Word:

I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.                                    Lk. 23:43

Third Word:

Dear woman, here is your son.                                                                                                      Jn. 19:26

Fourth Word:

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?                                                     Mt. 27:46,Mk. 15:34

Sixth Word:

                        It is finished.                                                                                                                                                          Jn. 19:30

Seventh Word:

Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.                                                                      Lk. 23:46

Todays Focus: the Fifth Word:

I am thirsty.                                                                                                                                                                 Jn. 19:28

*** Overhead slide The closer you come to Jesus the better you will know his thirst.                                                                                  (Mother Teresa)

My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you             lay me in the dust of death.                                                                                            Ps. 22:15

They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.                    Ps. 69:21

The fifth word from the cross encourages in several ways; Jesus is fully:

1.      Human.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.                                                    Jn. 1:14a

2.      Aware.

34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to           drink it.                                                                                                                                                                                                Mt. 27:34

3.      Intent on fulfilling Old Testament scriptural prophecy.

so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty.                    Jn. 19:28

*** Overhead slide Will the guardians of a well die of thirst? (Malaysian Proverb)

4.      Offering Himself (The Living Water) to take my sin (thirst).

3Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever    drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.                                                                            Jn. 4:13-14

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.                    Jn. 7:37-38

 The Offer Fulfilled:

It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.                                                                                                                                                                                                   Rev 21:6
